Chinese leader Xi Jinping oversees the inauguration of the Information Support Force of the People's Liberation Army at a ceremony in Beijing on April 19, 2024. The Information Support Force will be led by top generals from the now-defunct SSF. These functions will now be supervised at his level and not through the Strategic Support Force, which served as a middleman,” Wuthnow said. Though US intelligence officials said the balloon was part of an extensive surveillance program run by the Chinese military, Xi may not have been aware of the mission. Chinese leader Xi Jinping has scrapped the People's Liberation Army's Strategic Support Force, a branch he founded in 2015.

In the coming days, Congress may advance a bill to ban TikTok or force its sale to an American company. A few schools have removed bathroom mirrors because so many students were leaving class to film TikTok videos there. For 14 percent of American adults, TikTok is a regular news source, up from 3 percent in 2020. People who don’t have traditional backgrounds in journalism, akin to bloggers for the TikTok era, aggregate and share information in snappy videos. Organizations including The New York Times are also making short-form videos in which reporters talk to the camera about their stories, the TikTok way.

Less than 20% of adults who do not identify as LGBT say they have experienced any of these same interactions. Consequences resulting from these negative health care experiences are also more than twice as common among LGBT adults. About a quarter of LGBT adults say they’ve had a recent health care experience that caused their health to get worse, compared with less than 10% of other adults, the survey found. LGBT adults are consistently more likely than non-LGBT adults to experience discrimination in their daily lives at least a few times a year across demographics. But among LGBT adults, negative experiences are more likely among those who are younger, women and have lower income.

The movement objecting to President Biden’s position on Israel by voting “uncommitted” drew a significant share of the vote on Tuesday in Minnesota despite having a hastily organized and low-budget campaign. With 90 percent of ballots counted on Tuesday night, “uncommitted” had earned 19 percent support, enough to send delegates to the Democratic National Convention. The number of protest votes in Minnesota suggested that dissatisfaction over Mr. Biden’s stance on the war in Gaza had spread beyond Muslim Americans to progressives and younger voters. In North Carolina, 12 percent of voters had cast ballots for “no preference” with more than 95 percent of the vote counted. Last week in Michigan, more than 101,000 people — 13 percent of voters — supported “uncommitted” in the Democratic primary, winning at least two delegates.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades was critical of Big 12 officials after coach Scott Drew was ejected for the first time in his 21 seasons with the 18th-ranked Bears after getting two technical fouls in a victory over No. The ejection came after Drew was assessed his second technical foul with about 11 1/2 minutes left. In that less than a half-minute span with a personal foul and those technical fouls against Baylor, the Cyclones made all eight of their free throws. ”Scott (Drew) said it, we have the best basketball league in the country. Both of Drew's technical fouls, the first coming midway through the first half, apparently were because he was outside the coaching box around the bench area.

Atlanta CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s attorneys in the Georgia election subversion case are set to defend their client in a Fulton County courtroom for the first time on Friday as they try to have the charges thrown out on First Amendment grounds. Fed officials don’t expect inflation to reach 2% until 2026, according to their latest economic projections released in September. If there’s one thing that would make the Fed quake in its boots, it would be worsening inflation expectations. The keyword there is “timely.”Sticky inflation could possibly “un-anchor” inflation expectations or elicit a consistent deterioration in Americans’ perception on inflation. “The Fed really just wants people to not expect inflation will run at 4% forever.”So what’s kept inflation expectations in check this long? For individuals and married people filing separately, the new federal standard deduction will increase to $14,600, up from $13,850 this year.

ARCADIA, Calif. A third officer and two paramedics facing charges in McClain's death are scheduled for trial later this year. Charges were not brought for two years after McClain's death, by which time the case along with others had sparked outrage and a national reckoning over racial injustice in American policing. The indictments followed an outcry over McClain’s death during protests ignited by the police killing of George Floyd. He called McClain’s death “tragic,” but said that finding made it hard to prove that the officers’ actions caused his death. Cina said he couldn’t rule out whether the stress of being held down by the officers may have contributed to McClain’s death.

Hong Kong CNN —China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday skirted questions on the whereabouts of the country’s defense minister, amid mounting speculation the recently promoted general has been placed under investigation. Qin, who was only foreign minister for seven months, has retained the position of state councillor – a senior role in China’s cabinet which Li also holds. On Chinese government and military websites, Li is still listed as the defense minister, state councillor and a member of the party’s powerful Central Military Commission (CMC). “The foreign minister and the defense minister are both externally facing interlocutors with the international community. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Republicans have enjoyed outsize control of the Legislature in one of the most closely divided states for a dozen years. Maintaining that power is now at the heart of a drama involving the state Supreme Court that has national political implications. “Impeachment is an act of pure power politics,” said Ben Wikler, chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. In 2020, the state Supreme Court, then controlled 4-3 by conservatives, came within one vote of overturning Democrat Joe Biden's nearly 21,000 vote victory over then-President Donald Trump. The Supreme Court has yet to decide whether it will take either case.

The first time the director Steven Soderbergh and the screenwriter Ed Solomon worked together was on the murder mystery “Mosaic” (2017), which could be watched as a choose-your-own-adventure-style story using a smartphone app or as a six-episode HBO mini-series. “Mosaic” drew mixed reviews, but the two men learned a lot doing it. The idea was greenlighted in 2021, and Solomon started writing two versions that would tell the same story differently. “When I got the schedule and I saw the number of days and the page count of just the linear, I was like, ‘This is physically impossible,’” Soderbergh said in a recent joint interview with Solomon. He added: “I had visions of ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ — that this was going to become a legendary folly.”

On Sunday night, with the second son, Kendall, poised to take it all, his younger sister, Shiv, betrayed him. The company would be sold to Lukas Matsson, a Swedish tech anarchocapitalist, with Shiv’s husband, Tom Wambsgans, as C.E.O. In its final season, “Succession” drew fewer than half the viewers, across all platforms, of “The Sopranos” or “Game of Thrones.” So if this was a water cooler show, that water was filtered. Yet its queasy, stinging satire of the ultrawealthy exerted an outsize influence on its audience. If you hardened your heart, or if your heart came pre-hardened, it made for a mutinous kind of comfort viewing, in which pleasure, envy and outrage could twine.
A problem surrounding how service obligation contracts are enforced could result in hundreds of pilots having to stay in uniform three years longer than they’d expected, possibly disrupting plans for civilian life, including wedding plans, their spouse’s careers and their own civilian employment opportunities. After realizing the mistake for those officers, Drew said the Army then did an audit of sorts for other aviation officers, finding the error that is now impacting roughly 600 people. “As an Aviation Officer near the end of my understood service obligation, this impacts my family and I the most as I am attempting to make the transition to civilian life,” the letter said. But Army pilots have an additional obligation of six years in uniform after they complete flight school. But no matter what occurred in the past, the officer told CNN that dozens of aviators are prepared to pursue legal action in court if the Army doesn’t resolve the issue.
New York CNN —Adidas has received hundreds of offers for the mountain of unsold Yeezy shoes designed by Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West. That represents a potential €500 million ($527 million) hit to the company’s bottom line. To his point, demand in the secondary resale market for Yeezy shoes is surging. Mocadlo said Impossible Kicks has about $2 million in Yeezy sneaker inventory currently, about 10,000 pairs. Prices for Yeezy sneakers are climbing due to tighter supply, according to StockX, a leading sneaker resale platform.
Yeezy sneakers currently are among the top three sellers on Impossible Kicks, a large online reseller of high-end sneakers and clothing that has 17 store locations in the United States. He said Yeezy sneakers are among the top three most-popular brands on the platform after Jordans and other Nike footwear, including Dunk and Air Max shoes. Impossible Kicks, seller of high-end sneakers, said demand for Yeezy sneakers is up 30% since last fall. So now prices for Yeezy sneakers are climbing due to tighter supply, according to StockX, a leading sneaker resale platform. “Since the start of the year, the average price of Yeezy sneakers has increased but sales overall have decreased on StockX,” Drew Haines, director of sneakers and collectibles at StockX, told CNNBusiness.
The Virginia elementary teacher who police say was intentionally shot by a 6-year-old student is being hailed as a hero who saved lives by escorting her students out of the classroom while wounded. The boy's mother had legally purchased the gun, Drew said. After the shooting, Drew said, police consulted with various agencies including the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, and services for children's welfare. Police, city and school district officials had not publicly named Zwerner as the teacher who was wounded prior to Monday. “Because of the ongoing nature of the investigation, we will not be releasing any further information at this time.”The 6-year-old student was not identified because of his age.

For Drew and Jonathan Scott, the twins better known as HGTV’s “Property Brothers,” real estate began as a side hustle. Drew ran up his credit cards while seeking work as an actor; Jonathan declared bankruptcy while working as a magician. Today, Scott Brothers Global is an entertainment and lifestyle empire, with branded lines of furniture, mattresses, rugs and other home goods available at Macy’s, Wayfair, Home Depot and elsewhere. Their production company is responsible for 15 unscripted series and TV specials, on subjects including real estate, food and cars, that air in over 160 countries. The eighth season of “Brother vs. Brother,” in which they compete to see who can renovate and sell a home at a bigger profit, starts Jan. 11 on HGTV and Discovery+.

A Delaware woman won state lottery games twice last month, claiming her $400,000 in winnings in a single day, lottery officials said. The woman wasn't identified, as winners are allowed to remain anonymous under a law regulating state lottery play in Delaware, one of at least six states that allow anonymity for some or all winners. "It’s great to see our players bring home six-figure prizes," state lottery acting director Helene Keeley said in the statement. Monday night's estimated Powerball jackpot reached a world-record $1.9 billion. The jackpot ballooned after there were no six-number winners in Saturday night's drawing, Powerball officials said.
